SHARE YOUR TOP 3 PRIORITIES

Dear Residents of Kitchener,

July 25, 2022.

Today, I continue to be as humbled by the privilege to serve you and our community as I was on the day you first elected me in 2014.

I love our city. I love the people of Kitchener.

I have dedicated my life to public service and I am passionate about serving you as your Mayor, while together we build one of the best city’s in Canada and in the world.

In the eight years since you chose me to serve as your Mayor, I am proud of what we have accomplished together to build a better Kitchener.

In that time, even after considering all the financial and human resource challenges we have faced, our list of shared accomplishments is long. We pulled together and have worked tirelessly as a community throughout that time, and especially over the past 24+ months since March 2020 in the fight against the Covid-19 global pandemic - the first global pandemic in more than a hundred years.

Since 2014, we have built stronger neighbourhoods, grown into being one of Canada’s fastest growing economies, and together, have worked towards building a better Kitchener that is a more inclusive and equitable city for everyone.

We built and continue to implement our award winning “Love My Hood” neighbourhood strategy while also investing in recreational amenities including seeing RBJ Schlegel Park Phase 1, an expansion at the Doon-Pioneer Park Community Centre and the new Tartan Avenue community centre come to fruition. We also approved a new Aquatic facility and field house to be built in RBJ Schlegel Park Phase 2 by 2025.

We heard your desire to see the City play a leadership role locally in homelessness and we have done that with our Housing for All strategy built on housing as a human right, while also creating an office of Equity, Anti-Racism and Indigenous Initiatives and enhancing service delivery by offering services to our residents in over 200 languages.

We also approved a new Economic Development strategy consisting of investments in pandemic recovery initiatives, affordable housing and investments in the jobs of the future like health innovation and creative industries. We did all this while keeping our taxes amongst the lowest in the province, while also investing in the services and infrastructure our community needs both today, and tomorrow.

As we look ahead, we can see many challenges facing our community - including continued management of the pandemic, financial pressures resulting from global events and the impacts of increased polarization that exists in our nation’s cities and communities. Dealing with these dynamic social challenges and complex issues impacting our cities will not only require us to ensure that those who need additional supports are able to get them, but dealing with them will also require demonstrated leadership, proven experience, endless energy and strong relationships with federal and provincial governments and community partners more than ever before. I am ready to face those challenges. I am ready to continue as that leader.

On Friday, I registered to once again ask for your support to serve as your Mayor for another four years. I want to keep working for you tirelessly, day in and day out, as I’ve done every day since being first elected as your Mayor and especially over the past two years while confronting COVID-19, where I worked with colleagues to provide strong and steady leadership locally, in a constantly changing global environment.

Today, I am asking for your support in the days and weeks ahead, and for your vote on October 24th. Together, we need to roll-up our sleeves to seize the opportunities and tackle the challenges which will be in front of us - protecting the gains we have made, and making sure Kitchener and its residents come back stronger than ever.

With appreciation and gratitude,

Berry Vrbanovic
