On Kitchener's Financial Picture
"Kitchener is in good financial shape. We have kept taxes as low as possible and have invested wisely when it was prudent to do so. And we are starting to see the results. I am committed to ensuring that we continue to find operational savings and efficiencies at the City and to invest appropriately in our future so as to ensure that we keep as many dollars where they belong – in the pockets of our taxpayers."
Over the past four years, Berry has…
Going forward, I will…
- As Chair of the Finance & Corporate Services committee, worked hard with his colleagues to ensure that the City is running effectively and efficiently. He has helped ensure that Kitchener’s tax bill remains amongst the lowest of large urban centres in Ontario. (Presently 6th lowest of 28 large urban centres)
- Supported the creation of an Audit Committee.
- Worked with Kitchener utilities to continue to have amongst the lowest natural gas rates in the region, ensuring our ownership benefits taxpayers directly and in terms of quality of life in Kitchener.
Going forward, I will…
- Work to keep Kitchener taxes amongst the lowest of Ontario large urban centres, with tax increases for core operations kept below the MPI.
- Continue to lobby the federal and provincial governments for long-term and sustainable infrastructure investments so that municipalities begin to receive more than 8 cents of every tax dollar collected.
- Look to find additional efficiencies and savings by working together with neighbouring municipalities.
